About Stainless Steel

What is stainless steel?

“Stainless Steel” is the term used for a group of iron that has high corrosion resistance.  Stainless Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon.  Stainless steel has low carbon content, and approximately 10.5% or more of chromium, main component which create chromium oxide film (CrO2) or passive film that will adhere on the surface to give stainless steel corrosion resistance.  This passive film, though can be destroyed by either chemical or oxygen in the environment, but it can be created by itself.

At present, there are more than 60 kinds of stainless steel.  Corrosion resistance and other properties of stainless steel can be improved by adding a mixture of chromium and other elements such as nitrogen, nickel, and etc.

With its unique features, , such as low maintenance expenses, ease of welding & forming, and recyclable, stainless steel is considered as valuable when compared to the other type of metal.

What are the properties of stainless steel?

Advantage

Detail

1

Corrosion resistance

All types of stainless steel do have corrosion resistance, but each type of stainless steel varies depending on the mixture.  Normal stainless steel can resist corrosion in the atmosphere, whereas high grade stainless steel can resist corrosion in acid, alkaline, or even chloride environment.

2

Easy of maintenance

Stainless steel is easy to clean and does not consume maintenance expenses.

3

Resistance to extreme climate and temperature

Stainless steel can withstand extreme climate and sudden temperature changes, and is fire-resistant; therefore, it is commonly used transport industry.

4

Easy assembly

Stainless steel can be trimmed, molded, formed into different shapes; as a result, designers and manufacturers usually apply stainless steel with material to produce furniture or external structure of the building.

5

Durability

Another significant feature of stainless steel is its stiffness and durability.  These features can be improved by cold forming, if one needs to reduce weight and thickness of stainless steel; thus provide more savings.

6

Beauty

Due to the shine of stainless steel, if being used at the exterior of the building, the elevator, cooking equipment, or even furniture, it will make home look beautiful, clean and attractive.

In addition, finishing of stainless steel also varies, which range from bronze, silver and gold, green, black, etc.  With this different types of finishing, users can apply the stainless steel in variety of ways.

7

Eco-Friendly

Stainless Steel is 100% recyclable, which considered as eco-friendly.

8

Safety and hygiene

Stainless steel is neutral, no absorption of flavor, resistance to acid, alkali, and heat.  With these properties, when use stainless steel in kitchen equipment, household, or in canned food; thus considered safety and hygiene to health.

Methods to clean stainless steel
Stainless steel is similar to any other material in the way that if used for a long time, spots stain from will be formed from food, fingerprint, or even the cleaning substance.  Using stainless steel in different types of environment will result in different levels of stain, corrosion, and spots; therefore, to clean stainless steel, one should observe the following point:-

  • Cause of stain and spots
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Cleaning solution
  • Environment

Rust

Soak the rusted portion with mixture of water and nitric acid (proportion 9:1) for 1 hour and rinse off with clean water.  Dip the rusted portion with oxalic acid solution for 20 minutes, rinse off with cold water and wipe dry.  In case that the stain is difficult to clean, machine may be used.

Methods to keep stainless steel in good condition

DO

DON’T

  • If not regularly clean, the object should be clean as soon as there is stain, dust, or spots.
  •  Cleaning should start from gentle cleaning solution or gentle method.  If still not sure, should start cleaning in a small area so as to ensure the upcoming results.
  • Use warm water to eliminate greasiness from oil or grease.
  • In the final stage of cleaning, rinse with clean water and wipe dry with soft cloth.
  • If acid is used to clean stainless steel, it should be used carefully and appropriately.
  • Avoid cleaning equipment made from metal or equipment that has been used to clean parts made from carbon steel.
  • If not sure of the cleaning method, do ask advice from specialists.

  • Do not coat stainless steel with wax, because stain easily occur and difficult to clean
  • Do not use cleaning products which contain a mixture of chloride and helide such as bromine, iodine, and fluorine

  • Do not use kill germs cleaner to clean stainless steel
  • Do not use hydrochloric acid to clean stainless steel, because it will result in  corrosion, both pinhole type and cracking type

  • Do not use cleaning solution that are not sure
  • Do not use silver cleaning solution

  • High concentration of detergent or soap solution, an object may be left with stain on the surface
  • Do not use 1-step cleaning process.  Preliminary cleaning should be done before removing thick stains.
